How to Get Started

From first flight to checkride.

Starting flight training can be confusing because the airplane, medical, club, supplies, ground school and FAA requirements all show up at once. This is the sequence I use to make it manageable.

Schedule a Discovery Flight

Get hands-on time in the airplane before making a larger commitment, and use the flight to talk through your goals and questions.

Get Your Medical Certificate

Confirm medical eligibility early before putting significant time and money into training. I can point you toward a local Aviation Medical Examiner and explain the basic process.

Join Countrywide Flyers

Club membership gives you access to the aircraft used for training. Current club fees are $99 to join and $49 per month.

Gear Up

Get the basics: headset, current chart access, logbook, and an EFB such as ForeFlight if you plan to use one. You do not need to buy the most expensive equipment on day one.

Enroll in Ground School

A structured self-paced program such as King Schools provides the knowledge foundation while instructor ground time focuses on application and gaps.

Build Your Training Plan

We'll map out a realistic syllabus and pace around your goals, schedule and budget so you always know what is next.

Start Flight and Ground Training

Begin regular lessons, build solo time as appropriate, and review progress throughout the program.

Pass the FAA Knowledge Test

Use ground school and practice testing to prepare for the Private Pilot Airman Knowledge Test at an approved testing center.

Take the Checkride

When the requirements are complete and you're proficient, the practical test includes an oral portion and a flight portion with a Designated Pilot Examiner.

International students: TSA Flight Training Security Program approval is an additional step and should be handled before training begins.
